Henri Matisse, The Snail, 1953 Henri Matisse was a pioneering French artist and a leading figure in modern art, known for making colourful works of art. Matisse developed his famous cut-out technique in the late 1930s, and The Snail from 1953 is one of his best-known works. He arranged painted paper shapes into a spiral, using bold colours to create a striking, vibrant artwork.
